There use to be in almost every town and city across America, but now adays finding a baseball card shop is usually slim to none, but there are a few still out there like Tim’s Baseball Card Shop in the Chicago Area. While Tim has a steady stream of customers buying sports trading cards and sports memorabilia, the last thing we would expect to see is Tim’s Baseball Card Shop in one of those expensive Super Bowl commercials.

Tim Herron, The Chicago area dealer will be one of four small American businesses featured in a spot being prepared by Miller/Coors Brewing Company to run during Super Bowl XLIV. The 30-second ad for Miller High Life will feature Herron, the owner of Tim’s Baseball Card Shop, along with the owners of Del’s Barber Shop in Escondido, Calif., Loretta’s Authentic Pralines in New Orleans, La., Bizarre Guitar & Drum in Phoenix, Ariz.

What would you do to win a prize package from Upper Deck that included 20 tickets to an NFL game, a $1,500 shopping spree on NFLShop.com and your very own Upper Deck football card? Well For Indianapolis Colts fan, Matt Ellis of Auburn, Indiana, the answer was in the ink. Ellis, has been collecting signatures of his favorite players since 2007. Only the surface he uses for them to write on is his own body. He then gets their Sharpie autos tattooed into his skin to show everyone his allegiance to the Colts.  “I’ve been a Colts fan since the Jim Harbaugh days. It was probably in the early ‘90s that I started following them,” said Ellis, a 38-year-old human resources staffing specialist. “But it wasn’t until 2007 that I started collecting their signatures on my body.”

His die-hard devotion to the Colts earned him top honors in Upper Deck’s recent “Ultimate NFL Fan” contest. Upper Deeck asked football fans everywhere to submit video, photo or written entries on why they should be considered the “ultimate NFL fan.”  “Matt is obviously a big football fan,” said Carrie Peterson, Upper Deck’s online marketing manager. “But to have more than 30 tattoos inked across his body from his favorite NFL team showed us just how fanatical he is. Congratulations to Matt.”

So how did this “great idea” get started you ask?  The first “auto-tatt” Ellis nabbed was from former Colts punter Hunter Smith. Following a local concert at which Smith’s acoustic rock band “Connersvine” performed, Ellis sought to get Smith’s signature on a football. Accompanied by his wife, Ann, Ellis decided while waiting in line to give her the football to get signed and was ready to simply have his ticket stub autographed. Ann jokingly said: “Have him sign your leg.” Suddenly a new pursuit was born.

Ellis has signatures of 31 different Colts players and two coaches from the 2006 NFL championship team tattooed on his body. “My legs are both covered from the knees down,” he said. He’s scored the majority of the autographs during Colts training camp in Terre Haute over the past three years and still has 21 more signatures to get from the Super Bowl-winning team. Both Marvin Harrison and Bob Sanders remain high on his must-have list.  “I feel they are two of the most valuable to obtain, so they’re right there with the best of the best,” said Ellis. “I’m afraid I might be going to the grave without Marvin’s, but we’ll see what happens.”

His most cherished auto-tatt of all remains the one he got on his left shoulder from former head coach Tony Dungy. “I love all my auto-tatts,” he said, “but since you’re asking for faves, I’d have to say the legend – Coach Dungy – is my favorite. “I can’t think of any other way to show these championship football stars my appreciation for what I believe is the most spirited and out-of-this-world team.” In addition to appearing on his very own Upper Deck football card inside a yet-to-be-determined 2010 set, Ellis has agreed to get Upper Deck’s “Ultimate Fan” logo tattooed on his chest.“Are you kidding me? Absolutely I will wear the Upper Deck Ultimate Fan logo with honor. If you are willing to put me on a trading card, the best I can do would be to ink and represent Upper Deck,” he  said. “How awesome will it be to say that I’ve got my own Upper Deck trading card?”

Apparently there have been widespread issues with damaged Young Guns being pulled out of 2009/10 Upper Deck Series One boxes, and thats not good since the Young Guns are the main hits from this product. The dealer manning the Atlanta Sports Cards table at the Sun-Times show in Chicago, this weekend claimed it wasn’t true, and didn’t know anything about it.

But apparently, Upper Deck noticed there was a problem, and during the Spring Expo in Toronto they took steps to attempt to correct it.  The following was posted at quincy at Hobby Insider:

On Thursday when the issue first came to light, they had an urgent high-level meeting. By Friday, sleeves of fresh, unblemished YG replacements were being packaged up from the printers to be sent to Expo and overseen by no less a person than UD’s CFO (according Karvin). They were overnighted, expedited through customs and actively being put into use by Saturday afternoon.

Apparently, YG replacements are being given to distributors after the close of Expo with instructions to spread the word and expedite card replacement as best they can. Not an ideal solution, but a pretty good one.  So, now it appears that the Tavares Young Gun that I was so excited to pull has been reprinted by Upper Deck.  Fine, if they were going to oversee a one-to-one exchange.  Not so good if they are pounding these out to their distributors.  There are shady characters in this hobby, and UD is relinquishing control of the major hits out of their flagship brand.

UD made things right with collectors at the Expo.  My main issue is that UD seems to have dealt with this problem in a panic, rather than giving this some deliberate thought, probably because they were faced with a number of angry people at their tables at the biggest show of the year for hockey.  That’s all well and good, but while those collectors were angry, and in person – they are by no means a majority.  These collectors were compensated (as everyone should be), and then some received a few extras as well.

So, for the guy in Vancouver who pulled these damaged Young Guns, here’s the situation.  He either has to send them back to UD (at his cost, probably tracked to make sure they don’t go missing, and in the interim they are probably going to lose 50 % of their value), or attempt to track down a distributor and try that route.

So, after listening to me rant, you are probably wondering if I have a better solution.  I do, but UD has already had many chances to implement it – fix their QC/QA department.  Or even better – actually a hire a QC/QA department.  Barring that?  Eat the criticism you get in person at the Expo, and ensure all collectors have equal access to these cards – and keep them all in your hands.  There might be one backdoor at UD, but that’s better than having Tavares Young Guns trickling out all over the continent.

Mr. Mint’s Revenge

Posted: November 15, 2009 in Baseball Cards, Mr. Mint

MrMintAl Rosen, once dubbed the “King of Cards” admitted he signed up for a memorabilia show in Queens this weekend to get back at a rival promoter who he claims reneged on a deal.  “That’s the main reason I’m doing this show, to rub a little salt,” Rosen said of his feud with promoter Jim Ryan, who runs competing conventions in Nassau and Westchester counties. Nicholas Hirshon has more on Mr. Mint’s revenge.

It’s been an intresting year for sport cards, in the last few months alot has happen, Topps & Upper Deck gone from the NBA for a Panini America exclusive, then Upper Deck bye bye baseball for the Topps exclusive, and now Topps is out of the NFL. According to reports Players Inc’s has decided to move forward with Panini and Upper Deck.
